The Write for your life project, sponsored by the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation and the North Carolina Writer's Network, consisted of workshops, led by Barbara Braveboy-Locklear, in which Native American women from various tribes, generations, and cultural and educational backgrounds wrote about issues important to them.  Each participant was expected to write one essay, one short story, one oral history, and three original poems.  All were encouraged to submit their works for publication. 

This selection includes the following pieces by Lumbee women: poems by Julia L. Russell, Patsy B. Baker, Sally Mae Oxendine, Barbara Braveboy-Locklear, and Wendy Moore Ledwell; and essays by Barbara Braveboy-Locklear (“Real Indian Art,” “Land of the Lumbee”), Lynette Dial (“The Papa I Knew”), Rosa Winfree (“A Place Called Home”), Karen Coronado (“Sifting Through Time”), and Hatty Ruth Miller (“Homeward Bound”).
