Dunlap, on pages 231-232. Dunlap quotes a passage from Stephen B. Weeks's 1891 article, The Lost Colony of Roanoke, which describes several characteristics of Lumbee speech at that time. The characteristics include drawling the last or next-to-last syllable in every sentence; beginning salutations with mon; using the parasitic (glide) y in words such as cow, girl, or kind; using instead of loving; using fayther instead of father; using aks for ask; and using housen for houses.
