The Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina System has endorsed a resolution to change the name of Pembroke State University to the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Before the change can be made, final approval must come from the state's General Assembly. For the legislature to consider the matter, an exception to the rules on what can be considered in a short session must be passed. Rep. Ronnie Sutton and Sen. David Parnell will introduce bills next month to allow an exception to the rules.

The college's name has been changed six times since its inception in 1887 as the Croatan Normal School. It has been a part of the University of North Carolina System since 1972.

The article mentions Adolph Dial, Lumbee educator, historian, and businessman, who was a key supporter of the recent movement to rename the school. Dial died last December; but his widow, Harriett, was in Chapel Hill for the Board of Governors' vote on Friday.
