Brief discussion of the career of James B. Chavis, UNC-P's Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, who is retiring after 35 years of service to the university.  Chavis began as director of the student store in 1964, then was financial aid officer and administrative assistant to the chancellor, then director of admissions, and finally (after an absence to serve as the state's chief ombudsman under Gov. Jim Hunt) vice chancellor for student affairs.  UNC-P's University Center was named for him twelve years ago.
