Dr. James B. Chavis, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at UNC-Pembroke, will retire at the end of April, 1999.  Chavis has been an administrator at the University for thirty-five years.  He received a bachelors degree from Pembroke State College in 1963, a masters in administration from East Carolina University, and a doctorate in higher education administration from Duke.  He has received several awards, including Distinguished Indian Educator from United Tribes of North Carolina (1986), Governor's Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award (1985), and UNC-Pembroke Distinguished Service Award (1978).
