BART011. Barton, Bruce. “UNC-Pembroke seeks new image.” (Editorial column--“As I See It.”) Carolina Indian Voice Thursday, 5 April 2000: page 2.

Publication type: Newspaper article

Barton comments on the statement in the recent Fayetteville Observer article (item DUVA001) that Chancellor Meadors wants UNCP to “break away from the label of an Indian school.” He argues that Fayetteville State doesn't distance itself from its black roots, or UNC-Chapel Hill from its white heritage. UNC-P, he states, needs to work even harder at recruiting Indian students, since many of the best are lost to UNC-Chapel Hill and other schools. Most importantly, “the school's Indian past and present and future should be showcased, highlighted, and treated as a strength. . . .”
