     BART002. Barton, Garry Lewis. “Why'd y'all slap my daddy's face?” Carolina Indian Voice 18 February 1999: 2.

Publication type: Newspaper article

Editorial. Not including an Indian candidate among the finalists for chancellor of UNC-Pembroke is like a slap in the face to Barton's father, Lewis Randolph (Lew) Barton, who spent most of his life fighting for “his people.” The omission brings back memories of the “de-Indianization” Lew Barton observed at the university and wrote about in a 1971 Robesonian article (see TheLumbee Indians: an annotated bibliography, item 212). The article urges readers to speak out vocally in demanding an Indian chancellor.
Note: Author is Lumbee.
