Publication type: Magazine article
This article is an hour-by-hour guide to exploration
of Pembroke (and a few nearby sites of importance to Lumbee history).
Interestingly written and incorporating information from interviews, it
also provides boxed information on where to stay, special
times to visit, and making contact, all with names,
addresses, hours, and telephone numbers.
The hour-by-hour itinerary includes (with interesting
details on each site) the following: Lumbee Guaranty bank, University of
North Carolina at Pembroke (highlighting Old Main, the statue of Hamilton
McMillan, the statue of the Hawk, and the museum of the Native American
Resource Center), the Indian Education Resource Center, the Lumber River,
the North Carolina Indian Cultural Center, meals at Linda's or Sheff's,
a walk through Pembroke (highlighting Pembroke Hardware, Johnson's Shoe
Shop, the Power House Gym (owned by Chief Iron Bear, a.k.a. Harold Collins),
McGirt's Frame Shop, and the office of the Carolina Indian Voice),
Mother Earth Creations, and the Prospect community (with lunch at the Cozy
Corner restaurant).
