This largely pictorial work with detailed captions begins with an introduction (pages 6-10) discussing the Town of Pembroke in relation to the Lumbee Indians and then provides some background information on UNC-Pembroke.

Chapters follow on:
    • (1) “Local Faces.” Includes the Red Man's Lodge, c.1914, and around forty individuals, including Herbert Lowry, police chief or policeman for thirty years; Billy Lowry, from whom land was purchased to situate UNC-Pembroke; Ira Pate Lowry, longtime band director at UNC-Pembroke; Herman Dial, first Lumbee to chair the Robeson County Board of Commissioners; Adolph Dial, who had extensive business holdings in the Town of Pembroke, served two terms in the North Carolina legislature, and established the American Indian Studies program at UNC-Pembroke; Horace Locklear, first Lumbee admitted to the N.C. Bar Association; Gene Locklear, first Lumbee in major league baseball; Milton Hunt, Pembroke mayor since 1983; and Dexter Brooks, first Lumbee Superior County judge in Robeson County.

    • (2) “Places of Worship and Religious Leaders,” which includes 32 photographs.  Odum Home (orphanage); Union Chapel Community Baptist Church; Burnt Swamp Baptist Association; Rev. Isaiah Locklear; Rev. Welton Lowry; Rev. C.E. Locklear; Rev. D. F. Lowry; Dr. Dalton Peter Brooks; Rev. Julian Ransom; Rev. J. J. Bell; Rev. Elias Rogers.

    • (3) “Business and Local Government,” which includes 37 photographs.  Pembroke Hardware, Old Foundry Restaurant (Lumberton), Lumbee Guaranty Bank; Dixie Queen; Super Dollar Store; Western Auto; Lumbee Indian Arts and Crafts; Log Cabin Service Station; Pembroke FCX; Southern Interiors; Carter's Florist; Road Runner Service Station; Maynor, Glenn; Locklear, Garth; Sutton, Ronnie (Rep. of District 85, “The Indian District,” NC legislature); Pembroke VFD; Pembroke Post Office; Pembroke Depot (in use 1885-1975).

    • (4)  “Schools and Education,” which includes 19 photographs.  Pembroke High School; Earlie Maynor; Elmer T. Lowry; UNC-Pembroke; Old Main; English E. Jones; Clifton Oxendine, Dr. Ruth Dial Woods.
