Gives brief historical background and description of current conditions in this town of about 2,500. About 90% of Pembroke's permanent population is Lumbee, and it is considered the tribe's cultural center. The University of North Carolina at Pembroke is located here, as is the Lumbee Guaranty
Bank. The article describes recent growth and development—including a new mobile home plant, New Century Homes, right outside of town.  The plant employs primarily Pembroke residents.
