Brief description of a summer mathematics and science program for American Indian ninth-graders, hosted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Office for Student Counseling. The forty-two students, representing twelve states and eighteen tribes, were chosen from 200 applicants. The program is funded by the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES); this year an additional $6,000 came from IBM. Funding has also come from a three-year DeWitt Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund grant, which ends this year. The program's director is Dr. Freda Porter-Locklear, Lumbee. Lumbee high school teachers Wilma Godwin and Fannie Lowry teach some of the classes.
