STRI001. “Strife among Blacks, Lumbees hits campus.” Charlotte Observer Friday, 8 November 2002.

Publication type: Newspaper article

After an October 7 fight between Black and Lumbee students at the County Fair and the circulation of a letter calling Blacks “the enemy,” parents of about 50 Black students are seeking to have their children transferred from Purnell Swett High School. Many of the Black students live in Maxton, whose mayor, Lillie McKoy, is serving as their spokesperson. She indicates that the parents’ requests will be taken to the board of education if the principals deny the request. The North Carolina Human Relations Commission has been asked to form a human relations council to help ease the racial tensions among students.
