This article describes the numerous accomplishments of Welton Lowry, who taught in the public schools and was a minister (primarily at Lumberton's West End Baptist Church) for 69 years.

Lowry, born September 16, 1913, received an undergraduate degree from Pembroke State University and attended graduate school at George Peabody College for Teachers (Nashville, TN).  He was a tireless advocate for full federal recognition for the Lumbee.  He was a founding member of Robeson Historical Drama.  His awards include the Henry Berry Lowrie Award and the Leo Reno Award (the latter for his work with American Indian students).
