At a school board meeting, Superintendent Barry Harding
announced that the Public Schools of Robeson County has been awarded
three grants, totalling $9.5 million. A grant from the Schools and Libraries
Corporation for $7.5 million will help fund Internet access, infrastructure,
and telecommunications. A federal grant for $1.5 million will help the
system recruit, hire, and retain highly qualified administrators and
teachers. Another federal grant, for $500,000, will fund the hiring
of a reading specialist at each school to teach remedial reading.
In other business, the school board voted to pay $4,500
to the North Carolina School Boards Association to assist in conducting
the countys search for a new school superintendent.
