At a school board meeting, Superintendent Barry Harding announced that the Public Schools of Robeson County has been awarded three grants, totalling $9.5 million. A grant from the Schools and Libraries Corporation for $7.5 million will help fund Internet access, infrastructure, and telecommunications. A federal grant for $1.5 million will help the system recruit, hire, and retain highly qualified administrators and teachers. Another federal grant, for $500,000, will fund the hiring of a reading specialist at each school to teach remedial reading.

In other business, the school board voted to pay $4,500 to the North Carolina School Boards Association to assist in conducting the county’s search for a new school superintendent.
