KNIC013. Knick, Stanley. Along
the Robeson Trail (column). Carolina Indian Voice 7 January
1999:3.
Publication type: Newspaper article
Discusses education as an issue faced by the
Lumbee as well as other Indian communities. Prior to European contact,
and for a time afterwards, most teaching was done by family members.
The separate school system that was established for the ancestors of the
Lumbee in Robeson County is similar to mission or boarding schools for
Indians in that there was little instruction about Indian history or culture.
Now there is an Indian education component in the public schools of North
Carolina.
