COMtech (Carolina Commerce and Technology Center,
Inc.) is one of 60 businesses or organizations in the state which received
a grant from Golden LEAF (Long-term Economic Advancement Foundation).
COMtech is a cooperative project involving UNC-Pembroke,
Robeson Community College, the county school system, the county Board
of Commissioners, and Lumbee River Electric Membership Corporation.
The project will provide work force development programs and incubator
space for business and industry and entrepreneurial development services
to spur commercial and agricultural activity. In the spring, construction
will begin on a 612-acre park, off of N.C. 711 between Pembroke and
Lumberton.
Golden LEAF, headquartered in Rocky Mount, was
created with part of North Carolina's $4.6 billion share of the national
settlement of lawsuits against cigarette makers. It serves
the areas that are most dramatically affected by the decline of tobacco.
