2000 Census figures released on this date show that nine of the state's ten counties with the highest poverty rates border on or are east of Interstate 95, while six of the ten counties with the highest median household incomes and highest percentage of college graduates are in a 100-mile stretch from Raleigh to Winston-Salem.

Robeson County has the state's highest number of families living in poverty (about one-fifth).
