According to the N.C. Center for Health Statistics, 58% of the 2,149 babies born in Robeson County last year (2001?) were born to unwed mothers--the third highest rate in the state. In the preceding year, Robeson County's rate was the seventh highest. About two-thirds of the births were to minority women.

The county's Social Services department reports that, overall, about 60% of child support payments owed in the county are being paid. The article also discusses the nature of Medicaid, Work First, TANF, food stamp, and Adolescent Parenting programs.
