This article provides a fairly detailed description
of the rally, which received extensive national publicity (see The
Lumbee Indians: an annotated bibliography, pages 146-151). The rally,
attended by 100 Klansmen, was dispersed by 500 Lumbees, many of whom
carried squirrel guns and hunting knives. Lumbees shot out the tires
on the car that had hauled in the electricity generator. They demanded
that Klan wizard James W. Cole, the scheduled speaker, come forward,
but he did not. After someone threw a tear gas bomb into the crowd,
the rally broke up. The only injuries were minor ones to four individuals.
