Category: 33. The Henry Berry Lowry period

1135. Knick, Stanley. “Did Henry Berry Lowrie escape Robeson to become the Modoc’s Captain Jack?” Robesonian 25 Feb. 1993: 4A.

Publication type: Newspaper article

Among many versions of Lowrie’s death or disappearance is the dubious idea that he escaped to Oregon, joined the Modoc Indians, and became Captain Jack (their leader), known for his role in the Modoc War of 1872-83. This story was reported in the Robesonian and, later (1873), the Weldon (NC) Roanoke News.
