The New York Herald sent correspondents to Robeson County to cover the deeds of the Lowry Gang. This book compiles their letters to the Herald. The account makes no attempt at journalistic impartiality; its style aims at titillating readers. The Old Franklin edition adds “Miss Patton’s account of her experiences among them while a prisoner in their hands.” See comments by Evans (entry 1118), p. 272.
