Transcribes some of the diary which, Wishart’s son noted, consisted of “personal data jotted down in memorandum books, notes and letters from friends, and [Wishart’s] own comments and opinions on current affairs.” Includes a description of events leading to the killing of James Barnes, a family history of Henry Berry Lowry, accounts of Wishart’s troops’ activities on various days, descriptions of the gang, and moving accounts of Wishart’s adversity in trying to capture the gang (not enough troops, drunkenness, discipline problems, desertion among troops, and inadequate supplies). The remainder of theWishart Family Papers (not seen; UNC-WL, Southern Historical Collection, entry 4624) includes Wishart’s correspondence and notes on the gang, and a tintype (ca. 1871) showing three men with shotguns and a dead gang member (from OCLC record).
