The Lumbee River Council of Governments has initiated
a study of aquifers in Bladen, Columbus, Hoke, Robeson, Sampson, and Scotland
Counties. Many residents get their water from private wells.
People aren't experiencing shortages now, but the council wants to know
how water is being used, its quality, and who the large users are for purposes
of conservation and reuse. Besides installing groundwater wells to
collect continuous data on water levels, the council will survey large
water users - such as farms and factories - and will test a large number
of existing wells, looking for nitrates, disease-causing bacteria, and
other harmful substances.
