Byrd explains obstacles he encountered in tracking Indian ancestors (his paternal grandmother was from Robeson County). Lumbees have been listed, in legal and historical documents, as Negroes, mulattoes, mustees, Whites, or free persons of color. Census enumerators sometimes changed the spelling of Indian surnames. Indians were quiet and cautious during certain periods of history, keeping their Indian identity hidden even within the family and trying to stay off legal documents. Part 1 of this article (May, 1991 issue) provides a more general discussion of problems of genealogical research on North Carolina Indian ancestors.
