Chavers, who has a Ph.D. in communications from Stanford as well as masters degrees in communications and in anthropology, first distinguished himself as a navigator during the Vietnam War. He flew 138 missions and received the Air Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, and eight other awards. He served as president of Bacone College (Muskogee, Oklahoma) from 1978-1981. He worked as president of the Native American Scholarship Fund from 1970-1978 and again from 1988 to present.
