Features Jennifer Revels Baxter, daughter of Lonnie
Revels (a Guilford County resident who was elected on November 7 to the
Lumbee Tribal Council). Baxter, her husband Scott, and their two children
moved to Durham in fall 1999 and then to Chapel Hill in summer, 2000.
Baxter uses storytelling, music, dance, and art to educate elementary
school children, civic groups, nonprofit organizations, businesses, and
higher education audiences about the Lumbee and other Native Americans.
Her consulting firm is called Longhouse Productions. She explains,
“I am on a mission. Every day, I worry what will define Native
Americans, and Lumbees in North Carolina, in 50 or 100 years.... I'm doing
what I feel I must to expand understanding, shatter stereotypes and give
this community a better appreciation of our culture.”
