University of Oklahoma-Norman has been cited by the Oklahoma
Indian Times as the “Best place to go to college” partly because
Native Americans are the fastest growing segment of the school's
student body. Kelvin Sampson, a Lumbee who graduated from
UNC-Pembroke, has been head basketball coach since 1994. He is
thought to be the nation's only Native American head coach of a
Division I men's basketball team. The Sooners made it to the NCAA
tournament in 1994-95 and 1995-96.
