On May 5, Glenn Maynor was elected (18,043 to 7,706—unofficial returns) to a second term as sheriff of Robeson County.  His opponent, Hubert Stone, served as sheriff from 1978-1994.  Maynor is Lumbee; Stone is white.  The article discusses the fact that some of Stone's volunteer campaign workers were upset with the Fayetteville Observer-Times for a story which mentioned the belief of some Maynor supporters that Stone covered up information about the 1988 murder of Julian Pierce.  Also discussed is the fact that some Stone supporters urged Stone to run for election because they had been dissatisfied with Maynor's performance in his first term as sheriff.  Some also believed Maynor had fired 14 deputies for political reasons on the day he was sworn in.
