Publication type: Newspaper article

Russell Shaw, a reader, observes that Oxendine is a common surname among the Lumbee and wonders if John Oxendine, Georgia's newly elected insurance commissioner, is Lumbee.  The columnist answers that Oxendine is indeed Lumbee, his father was born in Fairmont (a community in Robeson County, N.C.) and he has relatives in Pembroke.  Oxendine states, “I go [to Pembroke] as often as I can.  I try to preserve my Lumbee heritage, and I'm very proud of it.”
