The U. S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development will award $8 million to the Lumbee Tribal Council, the first federal funding the new tribal government has received. The funding will be used for services such as modernizing and operating low-income housing, constructing new housing, purchase or improvement of rental or owner-occupied housing, and safety and crime prevention.

The funding is authorized under the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act of 1996. In the two prior years, Robeson County's funding was administered by LRDA.
