Reginald and Peggy Oxendine, who both have worked in local schools for over twenty years, have created a computer reading program called “Phonics Voyage,” which uses the metaphor of a voyage on a pirate ship to improve children's reading skills. Their company, Arrow Educational Products, is headquartered in Pembroke, N.C. Since March of 1999, over 2,000 copies had been sold worldwide. The program uses games, songs, and stories as rewards when the user completes a level. Children can use the program in a self-directed way, without guidance from a parent or teacher.
