Gary Locklear, who was Robeson County's chief District Court judge, was appointed by Governor Mike Easley to fill the vacant Superior Court judgeship position created when Dexter Brooks died.

Locklear grew up in the Robeson County community of Saddletree. He received an undergraduate degree from Pembroke State University in 1970 and a law degree from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1979. Locklear has taught in the community college system, worked as a lawyer in private practice, and spent three years as an assistant district attorney.

Locklear's appointment will expire in January 2003, but he plans to run for election to the position. The position will expire in 2004 (when Judge Dexter Brooks's term would have expired). Then, candidates will run for an eight-year judgeship term.
