In this installment in a series of essays on
the context of the Lumbee people, Knick observes that recognizing similarities
between the Lumbee and other tribes may have little impact on the daily
lives of Lumbee people. For some, federal recognition may be a matter
of little importance. Some Lumbee are profoundly connected to the
ways and philosophies of their ancestors; other are not. In sum,
the usefulness of an understanding of context and connection depends on
one's own point of view.
