the Robeson Trail (column). Carolina Indian Voice 21 January

This installment in a series of columns on the
context of the Lumbee makes two major points: (1) Some people believe
that not much has been written about the Lumbee; but in fact, the large
number and wide variety of studies listed in The Lumbee Indians: an
annotated bibliography is evidence of their distinctiveness as an
ethnic group; (2) There are several different stories among the Lumbee
themselves about the origins of the tribe, which probably means they are
the product of the merger of several tribes, just as other cultures such
as the Irish, Chinese, and Greeks are products of mergers.
