Category: 17. Tribal name and identity

the Robeson Trail (column). Carolina Indian Voice 11 March
1999: 4.
Publication type: Newspaper article
Useful discussion which focuses on Lumbee sense
of identity as a trait which makes them similar to other tribes.
Knick sees this sense of belonging as perhaps the most central
and distinctive Lumbee trait. This sense of identity functions at
the level of tribe and community as well as the level of individual.
It is not a quantitative trait, and it is not always observable (since
people and groups within the tribe will differ in opinion). It comes
strongly into play when the tribe is challenged, as in the 1958 Ku Klux
Routing.
