United States. By Philip H. Herbst. Intercultural P, 1997. Page 62.
Publication type: Book chapter or section
Brief mention. Explains that the first tribal name
for the Lumbee people (from 1889-1911) was Croatan, referring to one
theory of the trib's origins. Some tribal members and scholars
have believed that the tribe originated from intermarriage between the
Lost Colony and the Indians at the village (and island) of Croatan.
Some whites and blacks shortened the name to Cro, which
the Indians considered very offensive. The tribal name was thus changed
by the legislature of North Carolina to Indians of Robeson County
in 1911.
