Members of the tribe voted 2,065 to 143 (unofficial count) to amend the tribal constitution’s designation of the tribe’s territory. Rather than being the entire state of North Carolina, the territory will be the counties of Robeson, Scotland, Hoke, and Cumberland. This change places the constitution in alignment with the territory designated in the federal recognition bills introduced in February, 2003 (see items TOPR001 and TOPR003). Tribal members who live outside the four-county territory will still be able to apply for services.
