Lumbee Tribal chairperson Milton Hunt delivered the first State of the Tribe address, speaking for one hour at the tribal office in Pembroke. He noted that: (1) the tribe has received over $9 million in grants; (2) work is ongoing to petition, once again, for federal recognition; (3) formation of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the tribal government is almost complete; (4) new tribal enrollment cards are being issued; and (5) a public hearing on the 2002-2003 budget is planned for early September.

The article also discusses the economic, medical, and educational benefits that tribal members would derive from federal recognition. The federal recognition committee of the tribal council is preparing a bill and will share it with the full council and then hold public hearings on it.
