This editorial comments on the recent introduction of federal recognition bills into the 110th Congress. Mike McIntyre, a Democrat from Lumberton, introduced a bill in the U.S. House; Elizabeth Dole, a Salisbury Republican, introduced a bill in the U.S. Senate. The editorialist notes that the likelihood that one of the bills will succeed is better in this Congress, because Rep. Nick Rahall, a Democrat from West Virginia, is a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources (the committee to which the House bill was referred) and is a cosponsor of the House bill.

The editorialist states, “The tribe already has strong support from the state’s delegation in Washington who are working to build support for the bill. It’s up to tribe members and supporters to lobby hard too. Eventually, the tribe should get what it rightfully deserves.”
