Category: 17.5 Efforts to obtain federal recognition LOCK040. Locklear, Mark. "Lumbee vote put off until Aug. 2." Robesonian Wednesday, July 26 2006. Publication type: Newspaper article This article announces that the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs will hold a vote on August 2 on whether S. 660, "To provide for the acknowledgment of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, and for other purposes," will be sent to the floor of the full Senate. The vote was delayed a week because of the visit of Iraq's Prime Minister. If the committee sends the bill to the Senate floor, it might be sent as is or with amendments. Time is running short for both the Senate bill and the House bill, since Congress will be on vacation most of August (returning after Labor Day), but then will leave again to campaign for November elections. Both the House and the Senate bills were introduced in early 2005. Additional subjects: U. S.
