On Thursday, April 1, a hearing will be held in the House Resources Committee on the bill introduced by U. S. Representative Mike McIntyre for full federal recognition of the Lumbee tribe.  That committee has 52 members, so it would take a majority vote of 27 members to move the bill to the floor of the House of Representatives.  The bill has 235 cosponsors.

Seventy Lumbees, including some Tribal Council members, will attend the hearing.  Testimony will be presented by tribal attorney Arlinda Locklear, tribal historian Jack Campisi, tribal chairperson Jimmy Goins, U. S. Representative Mike McIntyre, and U. S. Senator Elizabeth Dole (who introduced a bill in the Senate for full federal recognition of the Lumbee).

A third bill related to Lumbee recognition was introduced in the U. S. House by Representative Charles Taylor.  That bill would remove legal obstacles to the processing of the massive Lumbee Petition, submitted to the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1987.  It could take several years for the review to be completed.
