KNIC017. Knick, Stanley. Along
the Robeson Trail (column). Carolina Indian Voice 3 December
1998:3.
Publication type: Newspaper article
Discusses the issues of sovereignty, or total
political independence from the United States. Recent U.S. policy
has been to consider federally recognized tribes as sovereign, although
tribes have been allowed to exercise their sovereignty only when it doesn't
conflict with the interests of government or big business. Knick
discusses what true sovereignty would mean for the Lumbee (if federally
recognized) and for already federally recognized tribes.
