JENK030. Jenkins, Venita. “Lumbee recognition stalled.” Fayetteville Observer May 31, 2004.

Publication type: Newspaper article

Brief article. The U. S. House Resources Committee has not taken action on H.R. 898, the bill for true federal recognition of the Lumbee introduced by Rep. Mike McIntyre. The bill is not on the committee’s calendar. There are over one hundred bills that have been referred to the committee. A spokesperson for Sen. Elizabeth Dole, who also introduced a bill for federal recognition, states that it is unlikely the full Senate will consider Dole’s bill before the presidential election in November.

The Lumbee tribe has hired a lobbyist, Paul Kavinoky, to work with tribal attorney Arlinda Locklear and with Rep. Mike McIntyre to push the House bill. The lobbyist is being paid $10,000 per month.
