This article announces that in 2006, only four new cases of syphilis were reported in Robeson County. This rate is a decrease of 97% compared to 2001, when Robeson County’s 144 new cases gave it the highest rate in the nation—72.5 cases per 100,000 residents and 27 times the national average. The Robeson County Health Department director attributes the improvement to the county’s syphilis elimination program (begun in 1999 with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), while the coordinator of this program credits the entire county for pulling together to eliminate the disease. The syphilis elimination program works on several fronts. Its free, confidential services include nurses who do testing on prisoners in the county’s jail; outreach workers who get the names of the sexual partners of people who have tested positive and then try to find and inform the partners; mobile testing labs at street parties, drag races, and other high-risk areas; the My Fair Lady program, which educates former prostitutes and sends them out to inform those still working as prostitutes about safe sex practices; and collaborating with local pastors, asking them to mention the program during church services. People who are reluctant to visit the Health Department may be more comfortable using the services of the syphilis elimination program. It is anticipated that the county’s rates of other sexually transmitted diseases, such as gonorrhea or HIV, might increase because the increased screening for syphilis might uncover the other diseases.
