PhytoMyco Research Corp. (Greenville, N.C.) is collecting a library of over 25,000 plant microbial extracts, over a three-year period, in order to isolate the microbes found in medicinal plants used by the Lumbee and Cherokee. The company believes these microbes offer great potential for discovering new drugs for treating AIDS, cancer, and other catastrophic diseases. The company notes that one quarter of prescription drugs are made from natural substances, but only 5% of possibly useful natural substances have been studied.
