A Lumbee infant with several congenital anomalies was having difficulty swallowing.  She was brought to the operating room at Duke Medical Center for a feeding gastrostomy and received general anesthesia (halothane and atracurium).  A detailed description is given of the malignant hyperthermia which ensued and how it was treated.  The authors note, based on a personal communication with K. Sugioka, that the incidence of malignant hyperthermia is much higher among the Lumbee that in the general population.
