Brief discussion of state government support for the North Carolina Indian Cultural Center in Pembroke. When the center was established in 1985, the General assembly provided $555,000 to purchase 456 acres. The expectation was that the center's board, private developers, and local government would raise funds to develop the tourist attraction. The board’ plans included a visitor's center, museum, hotel, restaurant, and Civil War-era Indian village. To continue receiving state money, the center was to raise $4 million by June, 2001. In 1995, the General Assembly lowered the amount to be raised to $3 million, since the board had only raised $150,000. In 2000 and 2001, the center received no state funding, although private donations increased. Thus far, the center’ facilities include an amphitheater, activities building, picnic area, nature trails, a pond, and a pool.
