JOHN001. Johnson, Doug. “Miss North Carolina title in court as Miss America Pageant nears.” Associated Press State & Local Wire Friday, 30 August 2002.

Publication type: Newspaper wire service story

Electronic access: Full text available in LEXIS-NEXIS Academic Universe

This article reports on a new development in the story involving Rebekah Chantay Revels, a Lumbee from St. Pauls who was chosen Miss North Carolina but then resigned her title--she asserts, under force--because a former fiancé e-mailed Miss America officials to inform them that he possesses semi-nude photographs of her. The pageant runner-up, Misty Clymer, has begun making appearances as Miss North Carolina. Revels has filed a suit in a state court against the Miss North Carolina pageant, asserting that the pageant breached its contract with her by terminating her without cause. The judge has temporarily reinstated her as Miss North Carolina; the court hearing is set for Tuesday, September 3. Her attorney is Barry Nakell of Chapel Hill, who represented the Lumbee in the 1975 double-voting case.
